Comic-Con fan wins out of this world ticket for $95,000 space trip after Big Bang Theory actor turns it down

Thousands of Comic-Con attendees grab free swag at the pop-culture convention, but one lucky fan nabbed the ultimate prize on Friday: a trip to space. Adult fans who lined up to question the stars of CBS' The Big Bang Theory were given silver envelopes with one containing a golden ticket. That ticket was for a space flight from XCOR Aerospace on the Lynx Experience, a two-seat launch vehicle that takes off and lands like a traditional aircraft.

The out-of-this-world trip was won by Mercedes Becerra of Paso Robles, California. The flight was first offered on stage by former NASA astronaut Richard Searfoss to Big Bang co-star Simon Helberg, whose character, Howard, blasted off into space at the end of the fifth season. But Helberg declined the offer. 'Altitudes give me a lot of gas,' he joked. For the first time, The Big Bang Theory panel took over the San Diego Convention Center's Hall H, the mammoth room that can accommodate 6,500 con-goers.

Big Bang star Jim Parsons joined the panel on a monitor via satellite, but Johnny Galecki was absent because of a flight delay. Chuck Lorre, series' co-creator and executive producer, made the suggestion that the golden ticket holder be given the ride instead and the lucky winner was announced by Tweet. 'With our friends @BigBang_CBS, just gave a lucky fan a Lynx flight! Congrats Mercedes Becerra, you're going to spaaaaaace! #WBSDCC,' XCOR Aerospace wrote.

Lorre later said in a news release issued by XCOR and Warner Bros. Television: 'We are so proud and grateful to be part of this adventure. 'The Big Bang Theory, boldly going where no sitcom has gone before!' XCOR is one of several companies developing suborbital vehicles for commercial space tourist flights. The two-seater craft, called Lynx, will be able to take off and land at standard airports and unlike other spacecraft it will be a reusable space plane, capable of making up to four trips per day.

It will take a pilot and passenger to the edge of space for a few minutes of microgravity and the ultimate view of the Earth. XCOR anticipates beginning space tourist flights on the new plane in 2013, with tickets selling for $95,000 per person.
