The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons swaps geeky scientist for gay activist in new HBO movie The Normal Heart

Talented actor Jim Parsons publicly revealed he's gay last year and that he has been in a ten-year relationship with his partner. And now the Big Bang Theory star will play a gay-rights activist in Ryan Murphy's helmed HBO movie The Normal Heart alongside Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo, and Taylor Kitsch. Parsons, 39, was photographed on the set today in New York's Financial District alongside Ruffalo in the adaptation of the Tony winning Larry Krammer play.

Parsons will play gay activist Tommy Boatwright, the role which he portrayed in the 2011 Broadway revival. Wearing grey jeans and shoes, with a dark sweater and tie, JIm looked relaxed on the set as he sipped a Starbucks, held a script, and waved to some fans. Co-star Ruffalo - who plays Ned Weeks - was also in good spirits as he gave the peace sign to fans and photographers as he got ready to start filming in the Big Apple.

Although the Emmy winning actor refused to name his long term partner he opened-up to writer, Patrick Healy, while discussing the Broadway version he previously starred-in - the journalist wrote about the star: 'The Normal Heart' resonated with him on a few levels: Mr Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship.'

Also starring in The Normal Heart is Friday Nights Lights star Taylor Kitsch - he plays Bruce Niles, described as 'a closeted investment banker who becomes a prominent AIDS activist'. The 32-year-old star has been sporting a new blonde look for the role and was previously spotted on set hurling a camera out of a window during one particularly tense scene. Production is scheduled to last over the summer with a premiere scheduled in New York for 2014.
